Send Five Girls To School

FUNDED April 15 2013 – Thank You!

NYF_OlgaMurray_2012When Olga Murray first visited Nepal, she saw girls sold by desperately poor families into lives of servitude or worse. So she decided to make a difference, by working with the families and providing the one the thing that they couldn’t afford: education for their children.

Twenty-two years later, people call Olga a modern-day abolitionist and “the Mother Teresa” of Nepal. She has received awards from the Dalai Lama and the King of Nepal for her considerable achievements since her creation of the Nepal Youth Foundation. All the more amazing is that she began this philanthropic endeavor in 1990 after she retired as an attorney for the California State Supreme Court.

“I just wish I started sooner,” said Murray, who celebrated her 87th birthday in 2012. “There is still so much to accomplish.” Under her stewardship, the Nepal Youth Foundation has freed more than 12,000 young girls from indentured servitude. In turn, these girls have gone back into their communities to work with others and help stop the practice.

Currently, NYF is one of Nepal’s biggest non-governmental providers of scholarships for both girls and boys. Your click today will help them send five more girls to school and, through their efforts, ensure countless more have their chance at a better life.

GreaterGood.org’s contributions to programs to empower children through education are made possible by the support of donors, shoppers, and clickers at The Literacy Site.
