Feed A Sea Lion For Two Months

FUNDED April 18 2013 – Thank You!

PMMC_NurseryCrowdsunning_March2013National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has declared the situation an “unusual mortality event” and marine biologists are currently trying to determine why hundreds of sea lion pups are coming ashore weak, sick, and unable to feed themselves along California’s shores.

But even as the pundits debate, the caregivers at the Pacific Marine Mammal Center have been taking in new pups almost daily and feeding them back to health.

“Our organization functions as a hospital for marine mammals in need, and offers them the medical care necessary to get the healthy enough to return home. This requires a great deal of resources including space, funds for medicine and food, medical staff time and vehicle transportation to and from the beaches,” said Executive Director Keith Matassa “With this high number of animals, we are going through our financial resources at an alarming rate. Every dollar counts, and anyone able to support us during this time is greatly appreciated.”

By April, PMMC was up to more than 150 “patients” at their facility. Pups will remain in their care until they are determined to be able to feed themselves. Then they are tagged and released back into the ocean.

Guatemala is one of the poorest countries in the Americas, with more than 50% of the population living on less than $2 a day. Many of the challenges Guatemalan families face stem from the lack of adequate housing — a typical Guatemalan home consists of cornstalk walls, a scrap metal roof and a dirt floor. Constru Casa builds safe, cement block houses for families in need, allowing them to focus on improving their health, sending their children to school, and escaping the cycle of poverty.
