Give A Month of Care To A Koala

FUNDED June 8 2013 – Thank You!

Although a national symbol and the inspiration for thousands of toy bears, koalas are threatened by the same loss of habitat that impacts many of Australia’s unique creatures as well as the dangers posed by human beings. Habitat loss causes koalas to spend more time on the ground moving between trees, which increases their chances of accidents and attack by predators. Many of the injured koalas found have had an unfortunate run-in with a vehicle or a dog.

The Australian nonprofit, Friends of the Koala, is dedicated to saving and improving the condition of koalas in the Northern Rivers of New South Wales. Northern Rivers’ koalas are similar in appearance to Queensland koalas but are smaller than their southern counterparts.

Volunteer rehabilitators operate a round-the-clock rescue service for sick, injured, and orphaned koalas. Other projects include a native plant nursery to help local gardeners plant koala food trees.

By helping people to become more aware of the koalas in the region, and how to protect them, FOK works to reduce threats to koalas as well as expand their habitat.

While the goal is to return as many koalas as possible to the wild, those koalas who cannot be safely released become “permanent care” residents in the group’s center.

All koalas rehabilitated and released by FOK are tagged. FOK also tracks the movement of koalas in the region to help scientists better understand and protect these beautiful creatures.

Pimms drinks his bottle while Georgina waits patiently for her turn. Both koala joeys (or infants) were filmed during rehabilitation by Friends of the Koala, Northern Rivers, NSW, Australia.
