Teach Ten Adults to Read

FUNDED July 2 2013 – Thank You!

LaGonave_ExienneLocated west-northwest of Port-au-Prince in the Gulf of Gonâve, the island of La Gonave has been called the “lost island” and “the land that Haiti forgot.” Yet 80,000 people who live there are committed to improving conditions, reversing decades of overgrazing and deforestation.

For twenty years, the La Gonave-Haiti Partnership has worked with the people of La Gonave to help them achieve their goals through better access to education, healthcare, and economic development.

Approximately two years ago, a woman in the community of Nan Mango asked if someone could teach her how to read and write. Today, the Partnership sponsors adult literacy classes in ten communities and more than 150 adults have achieved the equivalent of 6th grade literacy.

Here Exienne shows off the paper where she wrote her name, a skill she just recently learned.

La Gonave-Haiti Partnership believes that adult literacy is the foundation of all economic development and continue to expand their program. There are waiting lists for classes in each community.

“Hope makes one live”

These and other proverbs illustrate the work of La Gonave Haiti Partnership, a collaborative effort to address the issues facing the people of the region:

90,000 daily clicks funded this project – thank you!

Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Decades of political turmoil and natural disasters have caused widespread suffering, especially for Haiti’s children. Because so many of them suffer from malnutrition, recovering from illnesses such as malaria, typhoid and polio is especially difficult. Equally alarming is the fact that 90% of residents live far from a hospital. GreaterGood.org has teamed up with Jason Derulo, Jordin Sparks, and The M.A.D. Girls Inc. to combat Haiti’s tragic healthcare situation. With your support, they can give Haiti’s children access to Community Health Workers who will provide the care they so desperately need. There is no need for these children to suffer. Your clicks help them get the basic care they deserve.

135,000 daily clicks funded this project – thank you!

Urban pollution is on the rise. Now is the time to change the way city dwellers think about trees! City trees clean the air, provide carbon sinks, and make the cityscape more beautiful. But cities are seldom planned in a way that promotes healthy tree growth. Even when they do survive, city trees are frequently cut down to make way for new buildings or to improve views. Trees for Cities (TFC) works with local communities around the world to tackle global warming, create social cohesion and beautify urban areas of greatest need through their tree-planting and community education projects. Your clicks help plant much-needed trees in the UK, helping re-green England for many generations to come!

It’s fun yet structured curriculum increases girls’ self-confidence, teaches them to work effectively in teams, and develops healthy body awareness. Possibly the greatest benefit is the increased respect girls receive from families, friends and elders as they begin to thrive in non-traditional roles. Mirwais Mena New Bus crop

134,400 daily clicks funded this project – thank you!

For a girl living in Afghanistan, going to school isn’t easy. In 2008, several girls attending Mirwais Mena School for Girls in southern Afghanistan were attacked with acid by Taliban men while walking to school. In an effort to prevent further attacks, two reporters from the New York Times created the Safe Ride to School program, which raised money to purchase a school bus and hire a driver so the students could get to and from school safely. Now, five years later, the bus is breaking down. The loss of this program will force many girls to drop out of school. Your clicks help fund two new buses, and ensure that these Afghan girls will have a safe ride to school for years to come. The time is now!
