Around the world, Partners In Health works to close the gender gap when it comes to access to health care. In no area has this a more dramatic impact then their community health programs providing women with clean childbirth kits.
By actively reaching out to women for care before, during, and after pregnancy, PIH is striving to making true progress toward Millennium Development Goal 5, which aims to reduce maternal mortality around the world.
Through its Maternal Mortality Reduction Program, PIH employs community health workers specially trained in accompanying women through pregnancy and birth, thus ensuring that pregnant women have access to skilled care. These programs also provide needed employment and future security to the women trained as health workers, giving their families a much brighter future as well.
The PIH clean birth kits sound simple: exam gloves, razors, umbilical cord clamp, sterile gauze, washcloth, and soap or antibacterial wipes. But their impact is nothing short of amazing. With access to these materials that any mother in a developed nation takes for granted, PIH health workers can dramatically reduce the chance of infection for the mother and child.
