Help Homeless Veterans and Their Pets

FUNDED November 12 2018 – Thank You!

In the U.S., more than half a million people are homeless—and nearly 15% are our nation’s Veterans. Many of our Veterans count on their pets as true companions. And while homeless shelters are a key resource for Veterans who need food and a safe place to stay, most shelters in our country cannot accommodate animals.

Imagine you’re a Veteran who has fallen on hard times. You’ve served your country, but back home you can’t afford all necessities, like food, and clothing, and a place to live. You find yourself living on the street with your beloved dog or cat, a pet you consider part of your family. Things are tough, but your true companion gives you comfort and purpose as you work to find employment and get back on your feet.

Every night, you face a bleak, brutal decision: stay with your companion pet outside and brave the cold together, or check into the shelter and leave your pet alone in the dark and cold all night. You fought to keep our country safe, and now there’s nowhere safe for you and your pet to go on a cold night.

This is why GreaterGood.org’s signature program Safe Haven is headed to Philadelphia, where not a single homeless shelter accepts pets. In partnership with the Student-Run Emergency Unit of Philadelphia, we’re building the first housing for homeless Veterans that accommodate pets. This housing will be built from the ground up, and we need your help to reach our goal of $70,000 to make this project a reality.

You can help give homeless Veterans with pets a home for the holidays. We believe no pet or Veteran should be left behind — or out in the cold. Please click today.

Safe Haven is a GreaterGood.org signature program and an initiative of The Jackson Galaxy Project. We’re committed to ensuring that people and their pets have a safe place to stay by transforming homeless housing and domestic violence shelters to accommodate people and their pets.

Plant 44 Trees to Protect Pacific Northwestern Wildlife: Completed November 28, 2018

44,000 daily clicks funded this project – thank you!

The 43–mile Snoqualmie River and its tributaries provide critical riparian habitat to countless species in the Pacific Northwest, including wild salmon, songbirds, raptors, beavers, and crucial pollinators like bees. Without a buffer, the river suffers from agricultural runoff, high sediment loads, and unsuitably warm water. Planting trees along the river protects the ecosystem from these damaging forces, while providing shade to keep the water cool, and habitat to sustain the rich biodiversity of the area. Please click today to help us restore land along the river and protect endangered species!
