10 Fun Facts About Maine Coon Cats
Andrea Powell
Cats are adorable, entertaining purr machines that are demanding at times (or all the time), but we wouldn't have it any other way.
Each breed of cat is unique. Read on to learn more about the majestic Maine Coon cat and why this feline might be the purr-fect companion for you.
Gentle Giants

Maine Coons are the largest domestic cat breed who are as gentle as they are large. With males weighing up to twenty-five pounds and some exceeding three feet in length.
They are docile and friendly which makes them a great family pet.
Intelligent

They are curious, like all cats, but also super intelligent and trainable. Many have been taught to walk on a leash, high five, and have even taught themselves a few tricks like adjusting the thermostat.
Love Water

Cats and water usually do not mix, but due to the Maine Coons water-resistant fur and curiosity they enjoy playing with and in water.
Vocal Cats

Maine Coons are vocal cats who will purr, chirp or trill to express their feelings and get attention. They are talkative companions who will have you wondering if you have a bird or cat as a pet.
Built for Cold

Their thick fur and bushy tail give them a permanent blanket that allows them to tolerate the cold better than other felines. Their large paws can also act as snowshoes, but they still need protection from the bitter cold weather.
Tippy Ears

Maine coons have lynx-tipped ears meaning they have tufts of hair that grow at the tip of their ears. Aside from being adorable, some scientists believe lynx ear tufts can enhance hearing.
Long Bushy Tails

This is said to be the most distinctive trait of Main Coons, their long bushy tail. It is just as long or sometimes longer than their body and used to wrap around themselves to keep warm or for comfort.
It requires gentle brushing to maintain the amazing plume look.
Polydactyl

It is a historic trait of Maine Coons to be polydactyl. The extra toes allow them to move more easily through the snow and give the "snowshoe" look to their paws.
Their extra toes can enhance their grip which allows them to climb and grab items they desire with ease.
Dog of the Cat World

Maine Coons can learn basic commands often taught to dogs. Using the same positive reinforcement methods and tasty cat treats, Maine Coons are being taught to "sit" and even "fetch".
They are often referred to as the "dog of the cat world" due to their friendly demeanors and love for affection.
However, I would be curious as to how many times the commands are ignored by cats - because we all know cats have selective hearing.
State Cat of Maine

The native American breed originated in Maine and was recognized as the official state cat of Maine in 1985.
Main Coon cats have appeared in movies, hold records, and stolen the hearts of people around the country. It is easy to see why.
