Dogs are loyal companions and want to be by your side, not on your plate. 

The gut-wrenching truth is there are several countries with an active commercial dog meat trade, including India. 

It is horrific, illegal, and inhumane. Dogs are snatched off the streets and even pets are stolen and crammed into tight wire cages or tied in sacks without food or water awaiting a painful and cruel death.  

Humane World for Animals (formerly Humane Society of the United States) has been trying to end the barbaric dog meat trade by convincing those involved to change industries and even assisting with the transition, as well as working with local organizations and officials to enforce existing regulations. 

Their Animal Rescue Team recently rescued 18 dogs, many found tied in jute sacks, from three wholesalers in India who agreed to surrender the dogs. The terrified dogs wagged their tails in excitement as they were carried to freedom.

All dogs were examined, treated, microchipped, and vaccinated by a vet before they went to a safe space. 

Humane World for Animals shared, "Despite being illegal in India, thousands of dogs are killed each year for the dog meat trade. Humane World for Animals exposed this cruelty with shocking video footage from the northeastern state of Nagaland, where more than 30,000 street dogs and stolen pets are captured, slaughtered and sold in live markets annually."

They shared that many of the rescued dogs have already found loving homes. These are the lucky ones. 

An estimated 20 million dogs and 6 million cats are killed for human consumption across Asia every year. We need to be a voice for the voiceless animals and help end this atrocity.
