Pets and People Are Reeling From Severe Flooding in Central Europe, You Can Help

Sava's Safe Haven

Relentless rains began pounding Central Europe on September 12, causing severe flooding in multiple countries, as well as at least 24 deaths across Poland, Romania, Austria, and the Czech Republic. The extreme weather has also forced thousands to evacuate their homes, destroyed bridges and other infrastructure, caused power outages and disruptions to water service, and swamped shelters with animals in need. We’re supporting partners responding in the impacted countries, and you can help.

Thanks to your clicks, trivia participation, shopping for a cause, and direct donations, we’ve teamed up with Greater Good Charities and organizations in Poland and Romania to help those displaced in the chaos.

Among those we’re working with is Sava’s Safe Haven in Romania. According to the rescue, authorities have said 5,000 homes in their area have been impacted by the flooding, along with around 15,000 people.

HELP PEOPLE AND PETS IMPACTED BY FLOODS

Animals haven’t been spared, either, with thousands of farm animals, birds, and dogs believed to have died. For their part, Sava's has been caring for and feeding displaced dogs, with help from a food donation from Greater Good Charities. In all, they’ve already come to the aid of more than 100 dogs, many of which have ended up in their shelter.

In addition to the needs of these pets reeling from their ordeal, Sava’s says people could use a hand, as well, with items like hygiene products and cleaning supplies. With the mud and debris left behind in homes, there is a lot to clear out in neighborhoods. We’re working to supply hygiene kits with both types of supplies, as well as comfort items to those impacted.

We’ve also partnered with Fundacja Mam Pomysł in Poland, to whom Greater Good Charities also sent two pallets of dog food. The organization says it’s helped evacuate a shelter in Kłodzko and also saved 40 hedgehogs imperiled by the flooding.

They continue to be on call as flood waters recede, providing help to those who reach out, which has included finding ways to transport animals from difficult to reach areas back to safety. They’re even supplying fuel to drivers willing to help.

We’re continuing to assess needs as the fallout from this catastrophic flooding is better understood. As it stands, damages are expected to be in the billions of euros, and thousands of people who had to evacuate with dogs, horses, and other animals are still impacted.
