Family Ties Balloon To Senior Dog So Everyone Can Party Safely

At a recent family celebration, a clever and heartwarming idea turned a 16-year-old Yorkipoo into the star of the show—and kept him safe in the process. Marley, a senior dog beloved by his family, attended his humans’ backyard engagement party with a bright balloon tied to his collar. The gesture wasn’t just adorable, it was practical: the balloon helped partygoers avoid accidentally tripping over the tiny, slow-moving pup.

Senior dog safety is an important consideration, especially during busy events. According to Alexa Stockhausen, Marley’s longtime companion, the balloon was a simple solution that allowed him to be part of the festivities without being underfoot. “He still likes to be the life of the party, so we didn’t want to keep him inside,” Stockhausen told The Dodo. “It was the best solution to have him join the party, but in a safe way.”
Marley’s balloon, humorously labeled “BEWARE OF DOG” in bold black marker, floated above him throughout the day. The message was clearly tongue-in-cheek, given Marley’s sweet and gentle nature. While the sign may have drawn a few laughs, it served a very real purpose. “No one tripped, so it was a 10 out of 10,” Stockhausen said. “He kept it on the whole day.”
The idea came from Erica, Stockhausen’s sister and the bride-to-be. Her engagement party was the setting for Marley’s festive accessory, and guests were charmed by the thoughtful touch. “They loved it,” Stockhausen said. “Everybody already loves the guy, and they know he’s an older dog.”
For Marley, being part of the gathering was more than just a fun outing—it was a chance to stay close to the people he loves. “He doesn’t like to be alone very much, so I think he would prefer this over anything so he can be with everyone,” Stockhausen explained. That desire for companionship has been a consistent part of Marley’s personality since he joined the family years ago.
Marley became a member of the Stockhausen household after Alexa, then in eighth grade, pleaded for a puppy. Her mom eventually brought Marley home, and he’s been a constant presence ever since. “He’s always been such a people dog,” she said. “If we’re sitting on the couch, he has to be on the couch.”
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Stockhausen returned to her childhood home on Long Island after living in New York City. Marley, whom she affectionately calls a “Muppet,” was overjoyed by her return. “I was taking work calls, and he was just always sitting on my lap or right next to me, kind of just following me around the house,” she recalled.
Though Marley has slowed down with age, his cheerful spirit remains unchanged. Stockhausen noted that while he moves a bit more slowly, he’s still a happy dog who enjoys being close to his people. His continued involvement in family life, even in his senior years, reflects the deep bond he shares with those around him.
As pet owners look for ways to include aging animals in their lives, Marley’s story offers a touching example of creativity and care. Using a balloon to make a senior dog more visible at a party might seem simple, but it demonstrates how thoughtful accommodations can ensure older pets stay safe while remaining part of the action.
For those who follow Marley’s adventures online, his light-hearted balloon moment was just another chapter in a life filled with love and connection. As Stockhausen and her family showed, a little ingenuity can go a long way in making sure our furry companions continue to feel included, even as they grow older.
