How The Kindness Of One Woman Saved a 25-Year-Old Unwanted Parrot’s Life

When Wendy Albright stumbled upon a Craigslist ad five years ago, she didn’t expect it would lead to a life-changing bond with a 25-year-old umbrella cockatoo named Sweet Pea. The ad described a bird who was no longer wanted by her family. Sweet Pea was in poor condition, missing most of her feathers due to stress and suffering from a wing injury that meant she would never fly again. For Albright, who is known online as The Parrot Lady, the situation was heartbreaking—and it moved her to act immediately.

Sweet Pea’s story is a powerful example of how a little kindness and dedication can transform a life. Parrots, especially umbrella cockatoos, are among the most rehomed pets in the world. Their long lifespans and complex emotional needs often lead to abandonment or neglect. In Sweet Pea’s case, her previous environment had left her physically and emotionally scarred. But from the moment she met Albright, something shifted. As Albright recalled to The Dodo, “She clung to me and that was that.”
Sweet Pea went home with Albright that very day. It wasn’t long, however, before Albright noticed something troubling. The bird began having seizures, which Albright suspected had gone untreated for years. Determined to provide the best care possible, she consulted several veterinarians and eventually traveled from Boise, Idaho, to Salt Lake City, Utah, to see an avian specialist. The effort paid off. With proper treatment, Sweet Pea’s health began to improve significantly.
Today, Sweet Pea is almost unrecognizable from the fragile bird she once was. Her feathers have largely grown back, her seizures are under control, and her demeanor has softened. “It’s like night and day from when I first got her,” Albright shared. Sweet Pea has become calmer, more trusting, and deeply affectionate toward those around her.
One of the most touching aspects of Sweet Pea’s personality is her ability to connect with people on a deeply emotional level. Albright described a recent encounter between the cockatoo and a young boy on the autism spectrum. Known for her energetic and sometimes loud behavior, Sweet Pea surprised everyone by approaching the boy quietly and gently. “She came completely down to his level and walked up to him very quietly and just sat next to him and cooed to him,” Albright said. It was a moment that spoke volumes about the bird’s emotional intelligence and capacity for empathy.
Sweet Pea’s charm doesn’t stop there. Her playful side has also come to light, earning her the affectionate nickname Drama Mama. In one instance, after being denied a treat, she pretended to limp—clearly trying to win sympathy. She shares a particularly close bond with her dog sibling, a black Labrador named Copper. The two are often seen together in Albright’s social media posts, and Sweet Pea has even picked up on some canine habits, including barking like her furry friend. These moments not only highlight her intelligence but also her vibrant personality.
The relationship between Albright and Sweet Pea is especially heartwarming. No matter how long they’ve been apart, Sweet Pea greets her human with unbridled excitement, hopping toward her and bobbing her head in joy. “She just loves unconditionally,” Albright said. It’s a sentiment that resonates with many pet owners, but it feels particularly poignant given Sweet Pea’s difficult past.
For those unfamiliar with parrot adoption, Sweet Pea’s journey offers a compelling case for why these birds deserve more awareness and compassion. Parrots can live for decades and require a level of care and emotional engagement that many people underestimate. Albright, who actively promotes adoption over buying, hopes for a future where parrots are no longer traded or sold. Her work as The Parrot Lady is not just about sharing adorable clips and stories—it’s about advocacy and education.
I found this detail striking: Albright doesn’t see herself as Sweet Pea’s savior. Instead, she believes the bird saved her. That perspective adds another layer of depth to their story, emphasizing the mutual healing that can occur in human-animal relationships.
Sweet Pea’s transformation—from an unwanted, injured parrot to a joyful, expressive companion—reminds us of the profound impact that love, patience, and proper care can have. Her story is not just about recovery; it’s about resilience and the beautiful connections that can form when we open our hearts to those in need.
