Adorable Five-Pawed Puppy Hops Into Life Without Knowing She’s Different

When a tiny Great Dane puppy named Gema entered the world, it was immediately clear she was unlike her siblings. Not only was she significantly smaller—about a third the size of the others—but she was also born with a rare physical trait: an extra paw. This unique feature, combined with her petite frame, made her stand out in more ways than one. Stories like Gema’s shine a light on the resilience of animals with special needs and the compassionate individuals who step in to support them.

Gema’s original family recognized early on that they might not be equipped to give her the specialized care she could require. Wanting to give her the best possible chance, they made the difficult but selfless decision to surrender her to Stray Rescue of St. Louis. According to Natalie Thomson, the organization’s director of marketing, the family acted out of love and concern, hoping that the rescue could provide Gema with a fighting chance at a full life.
From the moment she arrived at the shelter, Gema captured hearts. Staff and volunteers were immediately taken by her joyful spirit and adorable appearance. “Everyone seems to squeal and say, ‘Awe, she is perfect,’” Thomson shared. Despite her physical differences, Gema radiates happiness and energy, quickly becoming a favorite among those caring for her. It's clear that this five-pawed puppy doesn’t see herself as any different from other dogs—she’s simply living her best life.
One of Gema’s front legs is unusually short, while the other has two paws, creating a distinctive gait. Rather than being hindered by her condition, she’s adapted in her own charming way. Like a tiny kangaroo, she often balances on her back legs, hopping and playing with the enthusiasm of any young pup. “She doesn’t know what all the hype is about,” Thomson said. “This is all she’s known and she’s just as happy as any other puppy.”
Currently, Gema is thriving in a foster home where she’s surrounded by love and plenty of playmates. Her foster family includes two other dogs, two cats, and three young boys who adore her. It’s an ideal environment for a growing puppy to explore, socialize, and receive the affection she craves. According to Thomson, Gema is especially fond of being held and cuddled, and her tail hasn’t stopped wagging since she arrived.
While Gema may eventually need surgery to address her unique front limbs, for now, her caretakers are focusing on her day-to-day wellbeing. The rescue team is closely monitoring her development and working with her foster family to determine the best course of action as she grows. This careful, step-by-step approach ensures that Gema’s needs are fully understood before any long-term decisions are made.
What struck me most about Gema’s story is how her presence is already making a broader impact. As Thomson noted, Gema is helping to raise awareness about special needs dogs—animals who may require a little extra care but offer just as much love and joy in return. Her journey is a reminder that every dog deserves a chance, regardless of physical differences.
Gema’s story also highlights the crucial role that animal rescues and foster families play in supporting pets with unique challenges. Organizations like Stray Rescue of St. Louis provide not only medical care and shelter but also the emotional support that animals like Gema need to thrive. The dedication of these caregivers ensures that special needs pets are not overlooked, but celebrated for their resilience and charm.
Eventually, Gema will be ready for adoption, and there’s little doubt she’ll find a forever home that appreciates her just as she is. Until then, she continues to enjoy a life filled with playtime, cuddles, and the unwavering support of those around her. Her story is a testament to the power of compassion and the joy that can come from embracing life’s little surprises—like an extra paw on a very special puppy.
For those inspired by Gema’s journey, there are ways to help. Donations to organizations like Stray Rescue of St. Louis can directly support the care of animals with special needs, ensuring they receive the treatment, time, and love they deserve.
