Strict Teacher’s Secret Life of Compassion at Children’s Hospital Revealed

At first glance, Jim O’Connor might seem like the quintessential strict teacher—stern, disciplined, and unyielding in his classroom rules. A veteran of the Vietnam War and a longtime algebra and calculus teacher at St. Francis High School in California, O’Connor has built a reputation as an authoritative figure who doesn’t believe school should be fun. But behind the no-nonsense exterior lies a surprising and deeply compassionate side that his students never expected. This story of a feared teacher and his unexpected double life offers a powerful reminder that people are often more than they appear. It’s a touching example of hidden kindness and quiet dedication.

Jim O’Connor has taught for years with a firm hand, believing that structure and discipline are essential to learning. “If you have a class full of 32 teenage boys, you better have some discipline,” he told TODAY. “If you don’t have control of the class, you don’t have a learning environment.” His students describe him as tough and serious, and when a CBS reporter asked them if they would associate the word “love” with their teacher, they were visibly taken aback. For them, O’Connor represented rules, rigor, and a strict classroom environment—not warmth or affection.

That perception shifted dramatically when one student happened to visit the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. While there, the student mentioned that he attended St. Francis High School. A hospital employee immediately asked if he knew Jim O’Connor. The student was surprised to learn that his strict math teacher was not only known at the hospital but was also one of its most dedicated volunteers. He had even topped the hospital’s blood donor list.

O’Connor first became involved with the hospital after a friend encouraged him to donate blood. As someone with Type O negative blood—a universal donor type—his contributions were especially valuable. Over time, donating became a regular part of his life. He has donated an astonishing 72 gallons of blood and platelets to date, making him one of the hospital’s most consistent and generous donors.

But O’Connor’s commitment didn’t stop there. During his visits, he noticed that some children, especially infants, had few or no visitors. Moved by their vulnerability, he asked hospital staff how he could help. Though he never married and has no children of his own, O’Connor began volunteering regularly, comforting and caring for the hospital’s youngest patients. Three days a week, he holds, feeds, and soothes sick babies—many of whom just need someone to be there for them.

Sherry Nolan, a clinical manager at the hospital, described O’Connor’s impact with admiration. “He holds them, feeds them, walks around with them, gets to know them and he can always coax a smile out of them,” she said. “They just stare at him adoringly and he can really just get the crabbiest baby to calm down. It’s amazing… He’s just a natural-born cuddler.”

O’Connor seems especially drawn to the babies who receive few visits. “The kids who have nobody, those are the ones who obviously need volunteers a lot,” he explained. “They just want to be held by somebody.” His presence provides comfort and stability to children who are often in pain or distress. Hospital staff say his contributions are invaluable. “Jim is invaluable to us,” said Erin Schmidt, while Nolan added, “We really do depend on him.”

What makes O’Connor’s story so compelling is the contrast between his two worlds. In school, he maintains discipline and structure, believing that his role as a teacher is to prepare students for life with seriousness and intent. Outside of school, he becomes a source of warmth and comfort for those who need it most. When a CBS reporter joked that he wasn’t actually a tough guy, O’Connor smiled and replied, “I know. But don’t tell my students.”

I found this detail striking—not just because of the surprise it must have been for his students, but because it illustrates how people often hold multitudes. A person can be firm in one setting and gentle in another, and both aspects can be equally sincere. O’Connor’s story reminds us not to make assumptions based on appearances or first impressions. His quiet acts of kindness, performed without expectation of recognition, have left a lasting impact on both his students and the hospital community.

Stories like Jim O’Connor’s resonate because they reveal the depth of human compassion that can exist in the most unexpected places. His dedication to helping sick children, while maintaining his role as a strict educator, offers a powerful example of how one person can make a profound difference in the lives of others. Whether it’s through the classroom or in a hospital nursery, O’Connor shows that care, discipline, and love are not mutually exclusive—they can coexist in ways that are both transformative and inspiring.
