Microchips save the lives of animals by reuniting lost pets with their owners or alerting rescues when an adopted pet is surrendered, like Fatima.

The sweet feline was adopted as a kitten six years ago and arrived at a shelter with a large untreated laceration on her hind leg. Her current owners could not afford her vet care and surrendered her to the shelter. 

No one knows how she sustained the severe wound, but she needs urgent care to heal. She shouldn't have to simply endure the pain - she deserves medical care, comfort, and a chance to heal.

The deep wound was untreated and due to the high risk of infection, her vet was unable to stitch it close. 

Instead, she will need to be on pain medication, antibiotics, and daily topical care by a vet to ward off infection. The lengthy and expensive recovery could have put her at risk of euthanasia at an overcrowded shelter, but her microchip saved her. 

Thanks to the microchip, the receiving shelter reached out to her previous rescue who said they would care for her. Her caretakers shared, "Microchips are so crucial in getting pets back to the rescue and the care they need. Fatima is one of the lucky ones."
