Zoo-normous Easter Egg Hunt Held for Endangered Animals at the London Zoo
According to the Zoological Society of London, Easter activities are off to a cracking good start!
While families are busy with the Zoo-normous Egg Hunt, zookeepers there have been busy stepping into the role of the Easter bunny to make sure the animals don't miss out on the Easter egg-citement, as they put it. The event is staged for endangered species residing there.
Easter Egg Hunt
Like so many zoos around the world, the London Zoo is always exploring creative new ways for the animals to practice their natural foraging and hunting skills, and Easter provides the zoo with the perfect opportunity to do just that. Zoo manager Dan Simmonds noted that encouraging this behavior serves an important purpose.
This year, workers there brightened the lives of critically endangered Sumatran tigers, meerkats, and squirrel monkeys with some tasty treats and fun toys for them to enjoy, all of which were presented in the form of brightly colored eggs decorated especially for Easter.
Sumatran Tigers
The seasonal event saw the zoo's animals follow special trails to find hidden treats filled with things like crickets, sweet potatoes, moss, and more.
For instance, Sumatran tiger cubs Crispin and Zac followed a cinnamon-scented trail to find large cardboard eggs to play with, while the meerkats foraged through rocks and sand to locate eggs containing moss and crickets.
Squirrel Monkeys
Their Bolivian black-capped squirrel monkeys were treated to eggs stuffed full of bits of steamed sweet potato mixed with sweetcorn and peas hanging high above in the branches of the trees they call home. The treats provided are all healthy and organic to complement their diets.
If you live in the area or will be visiting soon, you're encouraged to join in the fun and learn all about the zoo's egg-laying species while enjoying family trails and crafts. The seasonal event runs until April 16, so you better hop on it! Check out the video below.
