You Helped Evacuate More Than 85 Shelter Pets in the Wake of Hurricane Francine

Greater Good Charities

Hurricane Francine slammed into Louisiana last week with wind speeds as high as 100 miles per hour and rainfall totals nearing 10 inches in some areas. The strong storm knocked out power to more than 300,000 customers in southeast Louisiana, including about a third of households in the New Orleans metro area. Storm surges of up to nearly five feet also inundated coastal areas. These conditions combined to put 12 million people under a flood alert. In response, you helped us evacuate pets in need.

Thanks to your clicks, trivia participation, shopping for a cause, and direct donations, The Animal Rescue Site teamed up with Greater Good Charities and several animal rescues on an emergency Good Flight evacuation of more than 85 pets.

We transported Louisiana shelter pets, who were already in the shelter before the storm, to rescues in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, which had more room. This not only helps animals in need find forever homes faster, but it ensures there’s more shelter space in Louisiana for the animals that were displaced or separated from their families due to the storm.

HELP FLY PETS TO FREEDOM

Among the pets that hitched a ride was Camella, a 2-year-old Labrador Retriever mix.

Those who know Camella best say she’s very friendly and loved by shelter staff. She’s also a ray of sunshine on walks, which she hopes she will be taking with her forever family once she’s adopted in Wisconsin.

Tundra is also now awaiting her forever home in Wisconsin.

This 1-year-old Great Pyrenees mix, described as a “gentle giant”, is very loving and affectionate. She’s sure to have lots of cuddles for her soon-to-be forever family.

Rounding out this adorable trio of dog passengers is Dina.

This 5-and-a-half-month-old Boxer Terrier mix is tiny. Despite that, and the fact that she was abandoned at a dumping ground, she has a big heart and loves to watch TV while cuddling with that special someone. You’ve helped her get closer to that happy ending.
