Florida Man Attacked by Bison at Yellowstone National Park

The first bison-related incident of the year has occurred at Yellowstone National Park. A 47-year-old man from Florida did not follow the park rules of keeping at least 25 yards away from bison - and was gored.

According to National Park Services (NPS), the man was treated for minor injuries by emergency medical personnel.

This is just another example why visitors need to follow the distance rules. Bison hold the record for most injuries to people over other animals in Yellowstone, often due to people not following the rules.

Bison may look docile but make no mistake they are still a wild animal with the ability to outrun a human and do some serious damage with their horns.

NPS took to social media to once again remind people to observe from afar. The witty social media poster used humor to drive the message home.

The post started by saying, "When you follow safe wildlife-watching practices, you protect the health of the wildlife—and yourself! It’s a win-win-win, we all win kind of situation.

"⁣We get it. Sometimes, you may be extremely careful, meticulously follow all regulations, like staying at least 25 yards away, yet still have a bison encounter worth remembering…not remembering? If a bison does start to meander your way, be the bigger mammal and back away slowly, and don’t run or make sudden movements. ⁣Also, if they’re not moving, take the hint that it’s YOU who should be backing away."

After giving a few relatable yet impossible situations, they concluded the post by saying, "Bison may look friend-shaped, but they already have all the friends they want. Keep your distance and don’t make it awkward."

Bison are fascinating animals that have lived in the park since prehistoric times. Remember it is their home, and you are visiting, so please be courteous and keep a safe distance.
