You Helped Save Two Neglected Dogs, One Who Was Left Behind After Move
Michelle Milliken
When people move out, their pets unfortunately don’t always go with them. One such pet was a severely malnourished dog who’d been left in a crate when her owner was evicted. By the time she was found, she was fading fast. With your support, though, we were able to give a rescue a hand to make sure she got what she needed to survive.
The Pennsylvania SPCA says the pup, later named Lexi, was brought in by Philadelphia animal control officers as soon as they found her.
The shelter says, “What we saw broke our hearts. Lexi was emaciated – she weighed just 18 pounds. Her temperature was dangerously low, and her eyes were distant and vacant. She was so weak she couldn’t lift her head, let alone stand. The suffering she had endured was beyond words. But yet, even in that moment, there was a flicker of hope. It came in the form of our veterinary team.”

The team made sure she was warm and then got to work giving her IV fluids and an albumin transfusion. After that, round-the-clock care was needed to ensure Lexi rallied and regained her health. Thanks to your clicks, trivia participation, shopping for a cause, and direct donations, we’re able to provide shelters like Pennsylvania SPCA with essential supplies like food, vaccines, beds, and enrichment items so they have more money to devote to medical care to special cases like Lexi.
That medical care turned out well for her. These days she’s recovered and lapping up love from her forever family.
Another Pennsylvania SPCA pup whose story you helped change is Slim Jim. When he was rescued from the streets, Slim Jim’s bones were protruding under his skin, and his eyes were dull from his struggle to live.
The shelter says, “He was starving. So starving, in fact, that he had been eating rubber bands and other household garbage… We discovered that Slim Jim was battling more than just hunger. He had ear infections, intestinal parasites, Lyme disease, and painful arthritis. This suffering wasn’t new. It had been going on for some time. After taking him in, we were able to locate his owner, who admitted they had not provided Slim Jim with veterinary care. So, we did.”

That included a slow, careful refeeding plan and the medications he needed for his various ailments. It took time, but healing found its way to the suffering pup. As of the latest update, Slim Jim was said to be full of life and ready to find his forever home.
Lexi and Slim Jim are thriving today thanks to your support for shelters and the animals who come through their doors. Thank you! If you’d like to continue to provide supplies for shelters so they can devote more focus to medical care, click below!
