We asked for your help to care for sick, injured, and malnourished dogs in Greece and you stepped up in a big way.

The Animal Rescue Site and Greater Good Charities started helping local animal rescue groups in the city of Xanthi, Greece, in late 2023 after hearing that over 600 sick and starving dogs were barely surviving at the local dump.

Since then, we have learned that the number of homeless dogs and cats in the region around Xanthi number is in the thousands!

We shared the sad stories of nine dogs and asked for your support to cover their medical care.

All the dogs are doing well and will get a second chance thanks in part to your generosity. Read how they are doing now thanks to updates posted by their rescuers and caregivers, Dimitra Papadimou from Hundepaten Home, and Animal Action Greece.

Hugo

This sweet boy is starting to gain weight thanks to regular nutritious meals. His skin is no longer irritated, and his hair is starting to grow back. He has regained his strength, and the light has returned to his eyes. Hugo enjoys playing with other dogs at the shelter while he waits to be adopted.

Grandpa

This old fella was mistreated for most of his life and is still unsure of people and other dogs. For years, he had to fight for scraps of food at the dump. He will never go hungry again. He tolerates Dimitra and a shelter cat who he has befriended.

After devouring nutritious food and getting medical care, Grandpa - who is now called Buddy - is able to stand and walk on his own. He will live the rest of his days in a safe and loving environment.

Romina

Romina was found in the streets in horrible condition and her rescuers were unsure if she would survive. The sweet girl not only pulled through but is happy and healthy once again. She was treated for Lyme disease and several injuries to her body.

She has transformed into the playful pup she was always meant to be. Once she was cleared by the vet, a family in Germany adopted her.

Anton

Anton was called "ghost" by his rescuers because he was so skinny and missing all of his fur. Thanks to proper food and care, he is unrecognizable today. While he still prefers not to be touched and interacts with only a few other dogs, he is doing well. He resembles a bear now with his thick fur and is grateful to be in a safe place.

Amira

Amira had infected wounds on both of her broken front legs when she was rescued and almost had them amputated. Thanks to her dedicated caretakers and tinctures, she has recovered and can walk again. She still has scars on her legs but that doesn't stop her from running and playing.

She has her whole life ahead of her and thanks you for your support.

Ronti

Ronti has transformed from a hairless and skinny pup to a big and handsome fella. He was treated, vaccinated, and neutered before he went to Athens to meet his new family. He is finally living the life he deserves.

Jimmy

Jimmy was one of countless puppies born at the dump with a small chance of making it to their first birthday. He was emaciated and rescued just in time. With proper food and care, he quickly regained his strength and energy.

The little pup isn't so little anymore. The adventurous fella has found his person and is living life to the fullest.

Siri

Siri is a fighter and is slowly regaining her health. She was treated for fleas, ticks, and mange and her fur is finally starting to grow back.

No update photo was shared but know that Siri is going to live her best life thanks to your donations.

Rita

Rita arrived sick and weak suffering from several parasite diseases. She is on the road to recovery and is feeling better each day. She is still undergoing treatment for heart-worm disease but is expected to make a full recovery.

She will soon be ready to find a loving home.

Thanks to your generous donations, we have provided nutritious food, medical care, and funded spay-neuter services to reduce the number of dogs. We have saved countless lives and even helped some find loving homes.

But there are many more in need of emergency care. Donate now to help save more lives of dogs barely surviving at the dump and the surrounding area. Together we CAN make a difference.
