Animal Rights Activist Gets Matching Tattoo With Her Dog
An animal rights activist named Sam McGraw is going viral for her decision to get a matching tattoo with her dog.
McGraw took to TikTok to share about her decision, explaining that her rescue beagle, Ted, was tattooed with a serial number when he was being used in animal testing.
She explained that Ted spent the first five years of his life being abused in animal testing, but in the end, he was put up for adoption and found his way into McGraw's life.
Beagles are commonly used in animal testing due to their gentle nature, size, and ease of handling. They are often used in studies involving toxicity testing, pharmaceutical research, and medical device testing. Unfortunately, beagles in animal testing are often treated horribly and subjected to cruel and painful experiments.
Just last year, the Humane Society of the United States reported that thousands of beagles were removed from a breeding facility used for lab testing after "shocking violations of the Animal Welfare Act" were discovered.
While most states simply kill testing animals after they're done being used, a few select states have legislation that requires the labs to offer the animals for adoption.
In the now-viral video, McGraw revealed that she decided to get a tattoo to match Ted's serial number. She said she'd been contemplating getting a tattoo to represent her passion for animal rights and she felt like Ted's serial number was the perfect idea.
"I spend like 99% of my day advocating against animal testing. I just feel like this tattoo just makes sense and it's a great conversation starter to educate people who ask me what the heck my tattoo means," she said in the video.
She ended up getting the tattoo, "1947487," on the back of her leg. "The tattoo ink we picked is not tested on animals and VEGAN!!" she added in the description.
