Devastating Earthquake Strikes Myanmar, Help Us Support Survivors

Thousands are dead and thousands more are sleeping out in the open after a devastating earthquake rocked Myanmar and Thailand last week. With your support, we’re working to provide aid to those most impacted.
The 7.7 magnitude quake – the strongest in Myanmar in over 100 years – struck just outside Mandalay, the country’s second biggest city. Aftershocks continued long after, measuring as high as a 6.4 magnitude. In addition to demolished buildings, disrupted transport routes, and communication difficulties, the death toll is expected to surpass 3,000, according to the most recent estimates.

In a country where civil war has already displaced millions, the quake’s impacts are complicating matters even more.
UN Humanitarian and Resident Coordinator Marcoluigi Corsi says, “Even before this earthquake, nearly 20 million people in Myanmar were in need of humanitarian assistance. This latest tragedy compounds an already dire crisis and risks further eroding the resilience of communities already battered by conflict, displacement, and past disasters.”
Corsi added that water, food, hygiene items, and medicine are urgently needed.

This is a region where GreaterGood has long supported the refugee community, through the Mae Tao Clinic in Thailand, which provides schooling and food to children who have fled conflict in Myanmar and are now in boarding schools. Mae Tao also has a birthing center to ensure mothers can safely deliver their babies along the Myanmar/Thailand border, where infant mortality rates are substantially higher than in the rest of the country.
Our partner Greater Good Charities already has a team on the ground responding to the earthquake, and they’re working with long-term partners to mobilize emergency aid and critical medical teams to continue our support for those most at need in the region. If you’d like help, click below!
