These Nighttime Skincare Mistakes Are Damaging to Your Beauty and Complexion

Let's admit it. We spend a lot of time and money taking care of our body and complexion.

And yes, we may have discovered ways to save through DIY face masks and Mediterranean-inspired diets. But did you know that some habits before bedtime can impact a woman's delicate and lovely complexion?

Do your best to avoid these skincare mistakes, according to Reader's Digest Asia:

  • Not giving your face a good wash before going to bed. You can get acne due to clogged pores. Skin pores are helpful in secreting oil and releasing sweat, but they can be blocked by makeup, dust, and pollutants.
  • Getting less sleep. If you don't get adequate sleep, your skin and whole body don't have enough time for repair and rejuvenation. Your skin will age quickly, causing ugly wrinkles to appear and your complexion to appear sickly.
  • Applying the wrong anti-aging cream on your face. Your moisturizer must contain an active ingredient like retinol. Moisturizing your skin is not enough since the causes of wrinkles must be resolved, such as damage due to free radicals, loss of collagen, etc.

  • Not changing pillowcases on a regular basis. Pillowcases get contaminated with bacteria, sweat, and dead skin cells, which can pollute your skin. Change them at least once a week, or more frequently if you have an acne-prone complexion.
  • Sleeping with makeup on. This is one of the worst things you can do to your beauty. Before washing your face, make sure to remove all traces of makeup.
  • Not using a moisturizer regularly. Your skin needs hydration, whether it's normal, dry, or aging, to revitalize it. For those with oily or acne-prone skin, you must search for a moisturizer that's been formulated for your specific skin type to help fight acne and smooth your complexion.
  • Having a plain, cotton pillowcase. Cotton creates damaging friction between its material and your skin. It's best to buy a satin or silk pillowcase, which is hypoallergenic and breathable.

  • Over-cleansing your skin. Everything that's too much is bad, and this principle includes skincare. Don't kill the good bacteria on your skin and damage its protective layer. If you don't stop this habit, your skin will become prone to infection and inflammation.
  • Your bedroom is not humid enough. Set a humidifier inside your room, so your skin will maintain its moisture.
  • Your bedroom is rather warm. Based on studies, our body gets a fuller rest at lower temperatures. So don't miss the benefits of deep sleep.
  • Trusting on your cream to give your skin enough vitamins. Some nutrients can be applied directly on your skin, like vitamin C. However, B vitaminss can be obtained through a good diet only.

  • You don't moisturize your lips regularly. Lips dry easily, but you don't use retinoids on them. Instead, opt for a bit of coconut oil or a slathering of a lip ointment that contains shea butter and glycerine.
  • You sleep on your side or on your stomach. Even your sleeping position matters, because when you sleep on your stomach or side, your smooth complexion gets crushed into your pillow. Do your best to sleep on your back.
  • Indulging in a long, hot shower. Your skin quickly gets dehydrated by hot shower water. So choose a cooler temperature and moisturize your skin with lotion.
  • Consuming a bag of chips before bedtime. Extra salt on potato chips and similar snacks can cause puffiness in the morning because of fluid retention. If you want to enjoy a snack before hitting the sack, choose a fruit or vegetable for a healthier and more beautiful you.

For more than 20 years now, I’ve been devoting my heart, energy, and time to fulfilling my dream, which – many people may agree – is not among the easiest aspirations in life. Part of my happiness is having been able to lend a hand to many individuals, companies, and even governments as an investigative journalist, creative writer, TV director, and radio broadcaster.

At home, I spend my free time learning how to cook various cuisines. Tiramisu, chocolate mousse, and banoffee pie are my favorite desserts. Playing with our dogs, Mushu and Jerusalem, is also a special part of my day. And, of course, I read a lot – almost anything under the sun. But what really makes me feel alive is meeting people from various walks of life and writing about their stories, which echo with the tears and triumph of an unyielding spirit, humanity, and wisdom.
