You've Helped Provide Urgent Care for Orphaned Primates Rescued From Poachers

African primates, like chimpanzees and bonobos, face many threats to their survival. Humans and our activities are among those threats, as is habitat loss. We’ve been working with an organization dedicated to tackling both of those issues, and it’s thanks to your help that we’ve been able to do so.

Pan African Sanctuary Alliance, or PASA, recently shared an update on how their partnership with GreaterGood and Greater Good Charities has helped their mission of addressing threats to primates, and providing care to injured and ill primates that come into its network of sanctuaries and wildlife centers.

Among the animals that have benefitted are three chimpanzees and two baboons that were recently confiscated from poachers. The animals, some of whom were mere months old, ended up at Lwiro Primates Rehabilitation Centre, a PASA member center in Democratic Republic of Congo. Their survival was touch and go.

HELP SPECIES IMPACTED BY HABITAT LOSS

PASA explains, “One of the chimps, Kailo, was only around six months old and experiencing serious health concerns including severe diarrhea. Chimpanzees this young often struggle to survive without their mothers. Fortunately, through his determination, dedicated care from the emergency team and sanctuary staff, and your support, he has made remarkable progress.”

The other orphans were also given urgent medical treatment and are in the hands of experienced caregivers. One of these other orphans, a chimp named Malago, has become very close with Kailo, forming a brother-like bond.

PASA says these stories aren’t unusual, due to the damage inflicted by the illegal wildlife trade. The Lwiro Primates Rehabilitation Centre alone has already received 10 orphaned chimpanzees this year. Your clicks, shopping for a cause, and donations have helped ensure these animals have been given the help they need to survive and thrive after such a harrowing ordeal.

The organization says, “We extend our heartfelt appreciation for Greater Good’s continued support for the apes and monkeys of Africa. PASA members will continue to work tirelessly to rescue more victims of the wildlife trade and provide them with the care they desperately need. Your ongoing support is instrumental in achieving our shared goal of protecting and preserving these incredible primates.”

Our work with PASA has also included planting trees in critical chimpanzee habitat in Uganda. You can find more on that here. If you’d like to contribute further to tree planting efforts to help provide habitat for animals, click below!
