Brave Penguins Surf Over Hundreds Of Sea Lions To Get To The Ocean

Humboldt penguins dwell on land and regularly visit the ocean, spending much of their time swimming and diving for fish. Sometimes, however, a simple trip from the beach into the water ends up being a little more complicated than you might think.

For a waddle of Humboldt penguins living in South America, getting to the ocean became quite the mission when a massive colony of sea lions blocked their path.

BBC Earth shared a video of the penguins on YouTube saying: "To get to the sea, these Humboldt penguins have to squeeze through a rowdy crowd of Sea Lions… which proves to be tricky."

The penguins could be seen on a beach in the Atacama Desert in Chile. Despite the challenge before them, the waddle braved through the sea lions and made it to the ocean!

According to Penguins International, sea lions occasionally eat penguins making the quest to the sea even more dangerous.

The non-profit explains, "Although most sea lions are largely dependent on fish and smaller marine vertebrates, many of them have been recorded preying on penguins."

"Sea lion predation on penguins has been observed both during swimming at sea and while resting on land," they added.
