If you ever found yourself bored at a high school dance because there just weren’t enough dogs there, a recent event in Southern California could be right up your alley.

Earlier this month, San Diego County-based Helen Woodward Animal Center held its 11th Annual Puppy Prom and Kitty Court. According to the rescue, the event brings together “graduating classes” of former shelter pets and their now forever families.

Dogs in attendance can compete for Best Dressed Prom King and Queen, while cat owners send in photos of their feline friends to compete in the Kitty Court version of the contest.

Helen Woodward Animal Center Pet Acquisition Manager Labeth Thompson says, “The only thing better than Prom is Puppy Prom. It is such an adorable way to see how rescue pets are experiencing their happily-ever-after. We are so grateful to McGregor’s Bar & Grill for providing such a great location to celebrate the joy adoption brings to families and their pets.”

In addition to sauntering down the catwalk, attendees could take a shot at winning prizes with the Wheel of FURtune, get a beverage at a “Make Your Own Mutt-mosa Bar”, put on their best model face for photo shoots, and enjoy treats for both humans and dogs. It even helped serve as a way to make some canine friends.

Emily Navala, who attended with her dog Donna, said, “I feel like she’s having a great time with all the other pup queens and pup kings… For her, she has some social anxiety, and I wanted her to be able to socialize with other animals.”

All the proceeds from contest fees and opportunity drawings will benefit the rescue’s work, as will 30% of the restaurant’s proceeds from food and drink purchases during the event.
