Since the founding of the elite Thunderbirds demonstration teams in 1953, there have been 332 Air Force officers who have been members of that team. Of those 332 Air Force officers, 12 have been Black American men. Capt. Nelson has made history in being named to the team as the first Black American woman to be chosen to fly with them.
