I had moved to southwestern Indiana, 500 miles away from my family and boyfriend, to take my first professional job as a librarian. I spent most of my time in my apartment, as the area I lived in was very rural and there wasn't much to do, especially not by myself.
With Halloween approaching, I was seeing stuff online about black cats and how they have a hard time getting adopted for various reasons and had also noticed a black cat on Petfinder at a nearby shelter. Almost on a whim, I got in the car one Saturday and went to the shelter and decided to pay extra attention to the black cats.
I looked at every cat there, for at least an hour. As I browsed, I noticed a black cat asleep in a shoe box. I couldn't see his face, but I saw from the tag on the cage that he was the one I was looking at online. I kept circling back around to check if he was awake, but he wasn't.
Eventually he woke up, and as he climbed out of the box, I put my hand on the glass. He rubbed on the glass just as if I were petting him, and I was in love.
When I was filling out the paperwork, I learned he was the longest-term resident in the shelter - he'd been there all six months of his life. The staff was so excited that he was finally going home that they announced it over the loudspeaker and the lady at the front desk nearly cried saying goodbye to him. It seems I knew on some level that he was the one, long before I met him.
We've been together about two years, and I can't imagine life without my Agent Cooper.
