I had just moved in with my boyfriend in July 2000, and I’d grown up with cats my whole life. I had planned to bring one with me, but I decided they would be happier staying where they belonged. Instead, I told myself I’d make my way to the SPCA and give another cat a second chance.

Three days after we moved in, I heard meowing outside. At first, I assumed it was the neighbor’s cat. But when I looked, I found a gorgeous spotted lady waiting quietly under a tree.

I had no food or litter, so I called my boyfriend to tell him what was going on. He suggested I go to the store, pick up supplies, leave her outside, and if she was still there when I got back, bring her in and feed her.

When I returned, she was gone. But about ten minutes later, I heard meowing again. She walked right into the apartment, stayed the night, and then headed back out the door the next morning.

This routine went on for three days. That’s when we realized she was likely abandoned — especially since Quebec has one of the highest rates of abandoned pets on moving day.

The day we decided we were keeping her, she didn’t come back at her usual time. I started to worry. A friend was coming over, and I asked her to keep an eye out. I described the cat as small, cow-spotted, with a tail that was completely black except for a white tip.

A short while later, our friend came running back, saying she’d spotted her up the street and that she was on her way.

When she walked down the path toward us, we were overjoyed. From that moment on, she was ours.

We had her spayed, named her Monkey, and gave her the forever home she deserved. It’s been the best 15 years, and she’s still healthy, happy, and absolutely amazing.

Everything really does happen for a reason. Even though we chose to keep her, she’s the one who found us. She’s filled our lives with laughter and joy ever since — and I couldn’t have been luckier than to have this kitty walk straight into my life.
