My first rescue came from Sarge’s Rescue, a no-kill shelter in Waynesville, in December 2021. I was on their website looking for a cat to help someone else cope with a recent loss. Instead, I saw a picture of an adorable mixed-breed dog who looked like he was smiling. I immediately requested to meet him.

When we met, he pulled so hard toward me that the handler let go of the leash. The dog — named Crosby — ran straight into my arms as if we had always known each other. It was a perfect match. To make it even sweeter, his foster family sponsored the adoption as a Christmas gift, wishing us a “Merry Christmas.”

My second rescue is my six-year-old cat, Mowgli. My kids wanted a black cat, and I wanted an adult. When I went to the Charlotte animal shelter to meet Mowgli in October 2025, I sat down on the floor. He immediately curled up in my lap and began purring, and I knew I was taking him home. It felt meant to be, especially knowing the shelter was turning away cats older than a few months due to lack of space.
