When I walked into PetSmart's adoption weekend this September, I was on a mission. My calico Monee, my sweet companion for 13 years, passed away from a cancer-induced seizure one year ago. I miss her intensely and I needed a new friend to love and protect.

When I was ready to adopt, I wanted a female rescue, 1 to 2 years old, who would be affectionate and easygoing. I played with a few, but they were all so nervous - so many noises and smells, distractions. It was hard to make a connection. Then I noticed a little white one with very pretty blue eyes.

He was a male, 6 months old, covered in fleas - not at all what I was looking for. He was also Siamese, very chatty and nosy. He was born under a kitchen sink and was all alone: no litter, no brothers and sisters. "He," his foster mom said, "is not afraid of anything."

My resolve melted away as he calmly purred and took in the surroundings when I held him. He was completely at ease and very affectionate. I named him George after my favorite artist, George Rodrigue.

Today, George is flea-free, though he may be carrying ringworm and is going to the vet this week. But he is so joyful - he loves to play and snuggle. He sleeps on my pillow every night, usually across my neck - he cannot be close enough to my face. He loves doing chores, laying in the warm clean laundry, and he paces around the bathtub curiously when I take a bath. We talk all the time, and he always has to be included in every household activity.

He is always calm, confident and inquisitive. The only exception was a recent hail storm that sent him under the bed crying; I held him and soothed him like a baby, and he melted in my arms like a ragdoll. When he looks at me, I feel like we have known each other forever. He is so loving and I know he rescued me. My life is so much happier with him around, and he cheers up everyone he meets.
