I was at the vet's with Tasha, a very people-friendly 2 year old Siamese I adopted at a local shelter about eight months before, when this lady came in with a kitten she found in a garbage dump. The kitty was dirty and flea infested. Her whiskers were burnt off and she was trembling.

The moment she saw Tasha, though, she immediately ran to her to bump noses. Tasha was not all that pleased and started hissing. The kitty looked so forlorn at this rejection, it broke my heart. She was left at the vet's for a thorough cleaning and checkup. I said that if no one else wanted her, I'd take her. And no one did.

A week later, the kitty came home and was named Georgiana (Georgie, for short). She was terrified of me but wanted to follow Tasha everywhere. Tasha wasn't happy, so Georgie spent about a week hiding under an armoire, leaving only to eat a bit and go to the bathroom.

But little by little, they began to accept each other - to the point that Tasha has started acting like a big sister.

A year and four months later, they play fight, run around and cause general mayhem at home. Georgie has grown to be a very expressive and playful cat who loves 'hunting', pouncing on everything that does or doesn't move. While Georgie has come to accept me, she still prefers Tasha.

From what I gather from her behavior, someone or some people tortured her as a kitten; hence her burnt whiskers and terror of people. It took 10 months for her to allow me to pet her and a year for her to come to me when I called her. Only recently, she sometimes allows me to hug her for a few moments.

Whenever the doorbell rings (or there's a strong earthquake), she hides in a closet or under the bed until she feels the coast is clear. It has been slow going, but Georgie is slowly coming around. Meanwhile, both she and Tasha have greatly enriched my life.
