Special Rescue Tabby Named in Memory of Boy Whose Best Friend Was a Cat

I had to send my long haul trucking buddy Thomas over the Rainbow Bridge in August of 2014 due to bladder stone complications, after he fought for two weeks for his life. I had been an emotional wreck since, but I was not sure I was ready for another feline in my life, either.

A job transfer moved me to Phoenix two months after losing him, and I would occasionally go the shelters to "get catted" but none were a real match for me.

On January 31, 2015, I went to the shelter with my best friend and visited with three cats. Then she said, "I think you should take a look at this one." He had just been put on the adoption floor as I was visiting others.

His name was listed as "Ezra", which means "help" in Hebrew. He readily accepted my scratches in spite of the wound on his neck that was all stitched up and kept looking past me through the door as if looking for "someone" to walk in. He absently "booped" my nose, just like Thomas, and I started crying.

He instantly focused on me, he wanted to fix it, whatever was broken inside of me. His purrs and affection were suddenly more intensely focused. Just then, the volunteer walked in with a "pay it forward" notice: Someone had put up the adoption fee for the very next cat to be adopted in memory of 8-month-old Henry Adams, whose best friend was a Siamese named Mr. Pickles.

My best friend had lost her 9-month-old grandson in 2012 and the pictures were uncannily similar of the two little boys.

Henry came home with me and is currently curled up in a chair in my living room watching the fireplace. He sang "the song of his people" last night and we are still working out some issues, but our first full day together has begun: The woman who lost her cat and the cat who lost his human. We are healing together.
