We got our little girl, Maya, from Mexico—a street dog from Tijuana—in 2020. I had a hard time finding a dog I could truly rescue. We picked her up on December 13 after a nonstop transport from Mexico to Washington.

Her adoption fee helped cover spay and neuter services for local dogs whose owners couldn’t afford it, which made the rescue even more meaningful.

At the time, I worked a desk job and knew I couldn’t adopt unless I could bring her with me. I was given permission, and Maya came to work every day—sitting right behind me in my chair, going to the bank, and running errands.
