Our neighbors moved and left a cat behind. We would see her wandering the neighborhood, and we initially shooed her away because of our cats. Eventually we started to leave food out for her.
One morning as I was leaving for work on a bitterly cold day, I stooped down to put some water out for her and spilled some on her foot. The wind chill that morning was -35. I felt bad, and my husband let her into the house.
Our cold weather continued, and by the time it was nice enough for her to go back out, we discovered she was pregnant. So, we took care of her and waited for the day to come. When it did, it happened to be on the anniversary of my mother's death. The cat, who we called Missy, decided that she would not be left alone to have the kittens.
We had a place in the bottom of our bathroom linen closet set up, and I spent six hours in the bathroom with her while she had a litter of five darling little ones. After she had the first one, I got up to watch a bit of a basketball game, but she soon came into the living room meowing frantically until I went back in with her.
We managed to find homes for four of them, but the fifth, Christian, is still with us, as is Missy. So now, instead of a just a sad anniversary, I can say it's also a joyous one.
