The calico cat belonged to a neighbor's barn, but after he sold all his cattle and shut down the barn, the cats scattered. She survived the entire winter underneath our car hauler trailer. We named her Princess Peach.

The father of her litter is a cat named Rowan. He was brought to our property last year by his mother, Freya. Sadly, Freya was hit by a vehicle last fall when Rowan was only 12 weeks old. Rowan and Princess Peach spent the winter together, helping each other survive.

On Thursday, May 21, I came home after dropping my husband off at work. Around midnight, I wished Rowan and Princess Peach a good night, topped up the outdoor food dish, and headed to bed.

The next morning, I woke up to find that Princess Peach had given birth to three kittens on the cold cement outside. By the time I found them, I thought two of the kittens were dead. The third was crying and trying to nurse.

I grabbed some wet kitten food for Princess Peach, hoping to give her the nutrition she needed. Unfortunately, when my dad came down and started his truck, it accidentally frightened her away.

I picked up the two kittens I believed were dead and noticed that one of them twitched. They were incredibly cold. I gently rubbed the tiny kitten, trying to warm him up. After a while, he began crying again and moving more strongly.

I immediately rushed back for the other kitten, hoping I could save that one too. Unfortunately, it was too late. Despite my efforts, that kitten never warmed up.

I spent most of the morning trying to encourage Princess Peach to return and feed her babies, but she kept getting scared away throughout the day.

By evening, I knew I had to do something. We frequently have raccoons come around to eat, so leaving the kittens outside wasn't safe. I brought the surviving kittens inside and began bottle-feeding them and helping them eliminate waste.

Yesterday morning, I finally managed to catch Princess Peach. Today, she has relocated her kittens to a spot she approves of on our porch and has fully taken over grooming and feeding them herself.

It was the best possible outcome I could have hoped for.

We named the little girl Hazel and the little boy Finn.

This poor kitty family certainly had quite the weekend, but thanks to a lot of determination and a little luck, they are finally safe together.

James and his blind brother, William, were found abandoned on the street when they were just four weeks old. James was born with one blind eye that started to cause him discomfort. Over time, that eye became increasingly painful and irritated. James is the seeing-eye cat for his brother, making his condition even more urgent to treat.
