December 19, 2015, changed our lives forever. We walked into our local humane society that day, and my two boys found a dog who immediately captured all of our hearts. We thought we were rescuing Rudy — but in many ways, Rudy rescued us.

Rudy quickly found his place in our family and became our constant, loyal companion. The vet estimated he was about one to one-and-a-half years old. He was incredibly smart, and we suspected someone had worked with him before he arrived at the shelter because he knew basic commands and picked up house training almost immediately.

Since that day, Rudy — also known as “Rudolph Alfred” (Rudolph because it was near Christmas, and Alfred because he was Batman’s trusted friend) — began noticing and learning my youngest son Rylan’s seizure patterns. Rylan is a perinatal stroke survivor who suffered a stroke in utero at five months of pregnancy. Along with physical disabilities, he experiences debilitating seizures. Rudy has stayed loyally by his side through it all and has alerted me on several occasions when a seizure was about to begin.

When Rylan’s doctors at Duke recommended brain surgery, we knew we needed Rudy by our side. With the long trips, time away from home, and overwhelming anxiety, Rudy provided comfort and stability for Rylan and all of us. We had him certified as a service dog, and he became well known around Duke University Hospital, proudly wearing his Duke Blue Devils bandana as he walked beside Rylan through the neurology and children’s wings.

I never imagined that walking into the shelter that day would mean expanding our family in such a profound way. Rudy became far more than a pet. He was heaven-sent, and we truly believe he was meant to walk into our lives. Rescue dogs are extraordinary, and we are forever grateful to the people who dedicate their lives to saving these incredible animals with wet kisses and wagging tails.
