A Shelter Gave Up On This Dog for Being Quiet And Old, But They Were Wrong

This is our senior rescue pup, Snickers. In April 2023, a rescue I follow posted a video of a chubby little chihuahua mix who had been surrendered to a high-intake, high-kill shelter because “all he does is eat, sleep, and poop.”

The video showed him walking toward his people, followed by a heartbreaking shot of him shaking in his cage. I showed the video to my husband, and even though we are seniors and had no plans to adopt — we already had a three-legged senior cat rescued in 2016 from the same shelter — he said, “We have to get him.”

That’s exactly what we did. It took six months of daily walks, prescription food, medication, and lots of love to get him healthy enough for his dental surgery, where 22 teeth were removed. Today, Snickers is loving, smart, funny, and a wonderful travel companion. We love him beyond measure, are endlessly grateful he’s our boy, and make sure every day he’s living his best life.
