My eldest cat Sally was beginning to show her age at 18, which left my spirited 10 year old Chance in a rather boring position. I decided that Chance needed a buddy that could keep up with and distract him, so Sally could enjoy her golden years.

I volunteer at the local shelter, and for a few months, I kept an eye out for someone I thought would fit in with the family. One day, I heard staff members talking about a black cat that had just been put up for adoption. He had been found abandoned under some train tracks here in Chicago. Black cats are very common at the shelter, so I didn't think much of it.

That was until one of them mentioned how much he loved to be carried around. The next day, I decided to look for him, and for a while thought he had already been adopted because I didn't see him anywhere. Finally, I found him in a bottom corner kennel, sleeping in a hiding spot. You wouldn't know he was even there if you didn't already know he was there. He was adorable.

Growing up, my uncle always had a black cat named Spooky. When the first Spooky passed, he got Spooky 2. My first thought when I saw this little guy was, "Hey! It's the next Spooky." Then I read his card to see he was named Jeffrey, which was my uncle's name! I waited the whole week to see if he got adopted, and when Friday came around and he was still there, I snatched him up and took him home.

Chance and Spooky Boo almost instantly became best friends. They sleep together, bathe each other, wrestle, and keep each other entertained. Their favorite game is to play tug-of-war with some leis I brought home one day.

Sadly, Sally went to the Rainbow Bridge last week, and while I think they both notice she's gone, they still have each other. Bringing Boo home was probably one of the best decisions I've ever made and has made Sally's loss a bit easier for us all.
