One day, my next-door neighbor knocked on my door and asked, “Is this black kitten yours?”
My daughter named her Star—and she truly lives up to that name in our household.

That simple question could have sealed Star’s doom. I ran outside and found a very small kitten walking between our houses. She was mostly black, with a white belly, four white knee-high boots, and a white nose. From that day on, she became an indoor-only love.
Star has remained a fairly small cat, not quite eight pounds. As I write this, she must sense she’s being talked about—because she just climbed onto me. She isn’t really a lap cat, but she’s always in the same room with us and sleeps with me at night, usually on me.

She loves curling up under blankets on the living room chairs, which means I’ve learned one important rule: never sit on a blanket without checking for a small, furry surprise first.
