Three years ago, on February 11, I buried my high school sweetheart and husband of more than 50 years. Six months later, I lost our treasured 12-year-old rescue dog, Sal. Needless to say, I was devastated all over again.

Another dog wasn’t out of the question, but I planned to wait until spring. It was December, and I wasn’t ready yet. Then, after Christmas, in late January, I stopped by a local rescue shelter for reasons I still can’t explain.

And there she was.

Far from what most would consider “beautiful,” but beautiful to my eyes and my heart. She was a two-year-old Mini Bernese Mountain Dog–Poodle mix rescued from a puppy mill, where she had been forced to breed. She was a precious soul, and we connected instantly.

In that moment, I knew my husband had sent me there. It was the anniversary of the day he had suffered his massive stroke the year before. It felt like he was telling me I needed Tootsie now — and she needed me. I wasn’t meant to be alone any longer.

That was two years ago, on January 29. I love her dearly. ❣️

Tootsie's favorite activities are snuggling with me and running her little legs off! She truly loves her freedom ❤️.
