One night, my boyfriend and I were eating dinner and getting ready to head out to our weekly game night with friends when he got a call from our close friend Jimmy.

Jimmy asked, “Do you want a cat?”

We asked how old, and he said about four weeks. We rushed over to his apartment complex, where Jimmy was waiting with a box. He walked over, reached inside, and pulled out a tiny brown-and-orange tabby. She had big blue eyes and little spots on her gray belly.

The moment I held her, I melted. She fell asleep almost instantly in my arms.

A young tabby kitten rests its front paws over the edge of a beige cat tree perch, looking directly at the camera.

We asked Jimmy how he found her, and he told us he had been driving down Baymeadows Road when he saw something fall out from underneath the car in front of him. He stopped traffic, picked her up, and rushed her to the nearby Banfield at PetSmart to make sure she wasn’t hurt and to find out how old she was.

When we brought her home, our female cat Beatrice immediately adopted the kitten. She even let the baby nurse on her, even though she had no milk to give. Our male cat, Dante, took a little longer, but soon fell in love and became her adopted daddy.

Unfortunately, our apartment complex had a strict two-animal policy, and we knew we couldn’t keep her. About four weeks later, I completely panicked. I had fallen totally in love with this kitten and couldn’t imagine giving her up.

I called my parents, and they said, “We’ll take her.”

Now she has a dog best friend and loves going outside on a leash and harness. She acts a lot like a dog — drinks out of the toilet (yes, the toilet), growls at people knocking on the door while the dog barks, responds to her name, and even learned how to play fetch.

She is the love of my life, and I can’t imagine life without her. I thank Jimmy all the time for saving this little baby’s life.
