San Diego Humane Society Second Recipient Of $10,000 Surprise Check And Pet Supplies
We did it, again!
Thanks to your generous support and daily clicks, The Animal Rescue Site and Greater Good Charities surprised another overcrowded shelter with a large check and much-needed pet supplies in celebration of NBCUniversal Local’s 9th Annual Clear The Shelters campaign.
It was met with endless tail wagging, puppy kisses, and smiles.
Shelters across the country are over capacity and really need adopters to come forward. San Diego Humane Society is one of the 1,400 shelters participating in the Clear the Shelters campaign and reduced their adoption fees by 50% for the entire month of August.
A typical busy day at the shelter turned into a celebration when we surprised staff with boxes filled with soft blankets, toys, and food bowls - and a $10,000 check.
"This has been an incredibly challenging year. We’ve had more animals than we’ve ever had in our 143-year history. We’ve got a lot of animals to take care of," Gary Weitzman, president of San Diego Humane Society, told NBC 7. "This kind of support from these incredibly generous donors just means the world to us. It really lets us do our jobs."
A litter of puppies - who are hoping to find loving homes at the upcoming adoption event on Saturday, August 26th - showed their gratitude for the new toys by giving kisses.
Weitzman shared that adoption fees will be waived on Saturday from 10-3, which also happens to be National Dog Day, to help as many dogs and cats find forever homes. He said, "We really hope to give all of our animals a second chance, so come down and adopt."
The shelter shared the good news with their fans on Instagram and wrote, "We'd like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to @greatergoodcharities and @theanimalrescuesite for their generous donation of $10,000 and pet supplies, in partnership with @nbcuniversal to celebrate #ClearTheShelters! We are so grateful for their incredible gift to support the more than 2,300 animals currently in our care, and the hundreds more who come through our doors each day 💙".
We were able to spoil homeless pets thanks to your support. San Diego Humane Society is the second of three randomly selected shelters participating in the Clear The Shelters campaign who will receive a $10,000 grant and much-needed pet supplies.
There is still one more surprise shelter visit before the end of the month. Stay tuned...
