Artificial Intelligence Can Help Detect Risk Of Shark Attacks
We have been hearing more and more about the use of artificial intelligence (AI). Regardless of your opinion on it, there are times when it can work to our benefit.
That includes a new app, which will help people to be safer in the water. It doesn't teach them how to swim, but it uses shark attack forecast to determine the danger a person is putting themselves in when they are in the water.
The algorithm of the app uses hundreds of years of data about shark attacks and creates short-term forecasts for US beaches. It claims to have an 89% accuracy when all is said and done.
SafeWaters.AI is the name of the app and the creators hope it can help to save lives. They also want to reduce the repercussion that is often leveled on sharks after human attacks.
If you are worried about shark attacks, you don't have to be overly concerned. According to the Florida Museum, there is only one shark attack for every 3.7 million swimmers, with 60% of the shark attacks occurring in Florida. Incidentally, there have only been 28 recorded shark attacks in the United States.
The ability to use artificial intelligence to gather the data and look through it for trends can really be of benefit. There are hundreds of years of data on shark attacks, which can be used to determine if there is a significant amount of danger.
Some of the things that may be more specifically addressed in the app include the type of activity taking place in the water. Are you swimming, or surfing, where was it, when was it, and why did it happen? There may even be information on whether shiny jewelry was worn, which can be significant.
If you are interested in this app, it is being crowdfunded on Kickstarter. 5% of the future sales of the app will be donated toward efforts to clean the ocean.
I love to write and it keeps me busy. I've been working online, full time since 1999. When you can't find me at the keyboard, you'll find me getting as much as I can out of life. I enjoy living simply, playing games, visiting the beach, and spending time with my family.
