Adoptable Tony, the Special Needs Rescue Pup, is a Veritable Iron Man

Pima Animal Care Center

Tony Stark. Tony Hawk. Tony Robbins. With the name Tony, this sweet special-needs guy has some big shoes to fill, but the folks at Pima Animal Care Center in Tucson know this lovable fella is up for the task! You see, Tony is a survivor.

This plucky pup came to PACC unable to use his hind legs. Sadly, he had been found by the side of the road with a severe spinal fracture. Since his rescue, he's gotten a wheelchair of his very own, and you can see him popping wheelies all around the shelter with his volunteer friends!

Here's the thing, though: shelter life is not a long-term option for a dog like Tony. The shelter isn't built for his special needs. And while he has an incredibly resilient and happy personality, his advocates know that he urgently needs to find a home of his own.

Iron Man

Tony has adapted to his wheelchair wonderfully and is patient as he's loaded into his wheels for his daily outings. And don't be fooled - Tony is as athletic and energetic as the next guy. He loves to get out to walk, run, and chase tennis balls in the yard!

Currently in foster care, Tony's ideal home would be with someone who is comfortable handling his wheelchair and with the unique challenges of hind-end paralyzed pups. And while there are challenges, spending time with Tony is incredibly rewarding and worthwhile.

Special Needs Pets

Tony is always happy, smiling, and ready for adventure. He would truly appreciate the chance to live a full life in a loving home. Here are a few things Tony's friends have said about him:

- Tony is very smart and learned how to use a wheelchair quickly.
- He loves to play fetch and play with the water from a hose.
- He loves treats and is highly treat-motivated.
- He is a happy, intelligent, and energetic guy.
- He needs a savvy person committed to his long-term care.
- He will likely do best as an only pet.

Adopting Shelter Animals

If you can provide this very special dog with the loving home he deserves, please ask about Tony. Believed to be a Labrador retriever (possible mix), he's neutered, up to date on shots, and weighs approximately 59 pounds. Shelter staff believes this Iron Man is about 4 years old.

If you are interested in adopting Tony, please email PACC.AdoptAFoster@pima.gov. for an application or questions. He was admitted into the shelter on December 22, 2021, and he's ready to go home with you today! Refer to ID# A765611 when responding.
