Sad And "Ugly" Shelter Dog Finally Gets A Forever Home
Some dogs are almost instantly adopted from an animal shelter. This sometimes includes adorable puppies because we can't get enough of them when we see them.
Unfortunately, animal shelters are also often a very sad reality for other dogs. This includes senior dogs, who may have difficulty getting adopted, and other dogs that don't fit into the ideal of what a dog should look like.
When those dogs are ignored, it can weigh heavily on the individuals who work at the animal shelter. They deal with the dog day in and day out, so they know their personality, which is really where the rubber meets the road.
This was seen in the Orange County Animal Services in Orlando, Florida. They shared on Facebook that a dog named Dutchess came to the shelter near the end of 2022.
Dutchess had to be surrendered to the shelter because the family could no longer keep her in their apartment. She is a regular bully-type dog, but she does have one noticeable feature that kept people from adopting her.
The shelter spoke about it in the Facebook post, saying: "Her owner told us that she was born with a slight deformity just under both her eyes. It doesn't affect her in any way except one: people cannot seem to get past it."
They went on to say how much Dutchess adores everyone. Every day she runs to the kennel doors and continues to hold on to optimism.
They said: "For her, each day brings new people, and with that, new hope for adoption. Dutchess doesn't know a bad day."
The problem is many people think that she looks too ugly to adopt. They may ask what is wrong with her or if she is blind. Some may even ask how much it would cost to fix.
Dutchess continued in the shelter for 30 sad days. Despite the difficulties, the shelter knew that they had an incredible pup on their hands.
They described Dutchess as gentle, sweet, energetic, and intelligent. They even used Dutchess to calm down other dogs and control the group.
After they made the post on Facebook, it went viral, and Rescue Dogs Dream Inc. got involved. They took her from the shelter, put her in a foster home, and got her the medical attention she needed.
After a veterinarian told them that the growths under the eyes were uncomfortable for her, it was determined they should be removed. She got her surgery and was told that the growths were a rare type of cyst that is usually genetic.
At this point, Dutchess had already gotten a lot of attention, and she even received some adoption applications. It wasn't long after she was out of surgery that she was adopted and living with her new family.
According to Fox 35 Orlando, Dutchess, who has been renamed Lena, is now spoiled rotten. Her dad works from home, and she has a brother to play with in a fenced backyard.
I love it when a story ends well.
I love to write and it keeps me busy. I've been working online, full time since 1999. When you can't find me at the keyboard, you'll find me getting as much as I can out of life. I enjoy living simply, playing games, visiting the beach, and spending time with my family.
