The University Of Cambridge May Be Going 100% Vegan
There are a lot of people talking about the benefits of eating a vegan diet.
For most people, this means avoiding meat, milk, and eggs, but for others, it could be a true vegan lifestyle where they avoid anything with animals.
Sometimes, college students push for a certain type of lifestyle on campus. This can be difficult, especially for those who aren't willing to live it but they sometimes prevail.
This was seen at Cambridge University in the UK recently. A vote was taken by the Cambridge Student Union to start talking with the University's catering services. The reason? They want all animal products removed from school menus.
This proposal was backed by the nonprofit Plant-Based Universities campaign. That organization is looking for sustainable and 100% plant-based catering due to climate change and the biodiversity crisis.
According to KSBY, William Smith, who is part of that organization, said: "By removing animal products from its menus, the University could significantly reduce its environmental impact and showcase to the world its commitment to sustainability."
It isn't just Cambridge but all universities are being targeted by the nonprofit to offer 100% animal-free menus.
Although some students are all for this, not every student is happy to hear it. Some also realize that they can't change the menu because it isn't within their ability to do so.
In order to make sweeping changes to the menu, each university will have to make that determination. That being said, the university would be happy to talk it over with them.
According to ACB Action News, a spokesman from Cambridge University said: "The University of Cambridge removed ruminant meat from the menu in all university catering service cafes in 2016 and has a sustainable food policy which also seeks to actively promote plant-based options, remove unsustainable fish from the menu and reduce food waste. We always welcome suggestions from students and staff."
