In a heartfelt tribute to military service and sacrifice, a Vietnam veteran from Franklin County, Pennsylvania, is giving away his cherished 1966 Corvette Sting Ray convertible to a fellow veteran. The giveaway, inspired by the emotional country song "Riding with Private Malone," will take place on August 31 in Nashville, Tennessee. The story behind the car, its owner, and the inspiration that led to this generous act is both moving and deeply rooted in personal history.

The retired Army major, known simply as Jim due to safety concerns, has owned the classic red Corvette for 46 years. Originally blue, the car was repainted after being vandalized in 1986. Jim, now 78, bought the vehicle in 1979 from another Vietnam veteran who, like him and the car's original owner, served as an Army helicopter pilot. That shared military background among all three owners adds a profound layer of meaning to the car's legacy.

The story that moved Jim to part with his beloved car is captured in the lyrics of "Riding with Private Malone," a 2001 song by David Ball. In the song, a recently discharged soldier purchases a 1966 red Corvette, only to discover a letter in the glove box from its previous owner, Private Andrew Malone, who died in the Vietnam War. The note reveals the car was Malone’s dream, and now it belongs to someone who made it home. The message resonated deeply with Jim, who saw in Private Malone a reflection of his own fallen friend, Steve, an Army captain who died in Vietnam.

“Riding with Private Malone was kind of like me riding with Steve,” Jim shared, recalling the emotional journey of escorting his friend’s body home from the war. That experience, marked by grief and a sense of duty, stayed with him through the decades. Jim also remembered the cold reception he received during that flight home, when a flight attendant denied him a meal because he was military personnel. That moment, he said, influenced his later career as a commercial airline pilot, where he made it a point to ensure all military personnel were treated with respect, whether living or deceased.

The Corvette, with its original 327 V-8 engine, has been more than just a car for Jim. It has been a source of joy, freedom, and connection. He recounted moments of high-speed adventure and quiet drives with his wife to local spots like The Igloo. Over the years, the car has appeared in parades and weddings, and Jim has often let others take the wheel—so long as they knew how to handle a stick shift. “I just enjoy watching people smile and enjoy the car as much as we do,” he said.

Despite the car’s estimated value of nearly $100,000, Jim never considered selling it. Instead, he wanted to pass it on in a way that honored its military heritage. After being introduced to “Riding with Private Malone,” he reached out to David Ball’s team, who helped organize a nationwide contest to find a deserving veteran to receive the Corvette. Nominations are open through August 15, and the winner will be selected by Jim, his wife, and Ball’s team. Submissions must include the nominee’s military rank, service details, and a statement explaining why they deserve the car.

The giveaway event will be held at the Texas Troubadour Theater in Nashville. To protect the vehicle, it will be transported in an enclosed trailer rather than driven to the venue. For Jim, this moment is about more than giving away a car—it’s about honoring a legacy, connecting generations of veterans, and ensuring that the Corvette’s story continues in the hands of someone who truly understands its significance.
