Here are Ways to Encourage Your Dog Lose Weight Without Breaking Your Heart with Every Effort

Let's admit it. Many of us love pampering our dogs.

It feels so natural, wanting to give them treats for each good behavior -- even if it's just a matter of them looking at you with those lovely, soulful eyes. We want to reward almost every movement or facial expression that makes us happy.

However, let's face it. Obesity in dogs is now just as bad as the problem with obesity in humans worldwide. It's a double-whammy in many households with overweight people and overweight dogs.

And, just like in humans, obesity in dogs can lead to a lot of health complications, including diabetes, heart disease, cancer, osteoarthritis, and orthopedic problems.

Yes, restricting our dogs' diet can cause our hearts to twitch, but rewarding our dogs' unconditional love with a longer health span and lifespan is worth the effort. Here are some ways to help your dog to slim down according to PetHelpful:

  • You must determine first that your dog's weight gain is not caused by any medical conditions such as an underactive thyroid gland or diabetes. If your dog has any of these disorders, you must consult a local vet for proper treatment. A dog also tends to gain weight due to aging, and so it's best to ask a veterinary expert for proper diet and lifestyle changes.

  • Re-examine your dog's diet. You must ensure that your dog's diet consists of high-quality dog food that's high in protein but low in calories and fat. Read the label and follow the instruction on the feeding amount based on your dog's weight and size.
  • Be selective with dog treats. You must read the labels on dog treats, as well, to avoid calorie-rich snacks. Most human foods are a big no-no to dogs, but some are healthful enough, like carrots and apples (except core and seeds). To avoid foods that are toxic to dogs, you can go to the website of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) for more information.
  • More active lifestyle. Be active together! Go for walks, bike, or play with frisbees and other toys that your dog enjoys. You can also exercise together, go swimming or hiking, and take your best friend on more outdoor adventures. These physical activities will not just make both of you healthier but strengthen your bond as well.

  • Be strict with yourself and everyone else. You must inform everyone in your family that you're endeavoring to make your dog lose weight to become healthier. And so, no giving in to the temptation of feeding your dog extra portions or rewarding him with extra treats is important. It's hard, especially if your dog looks at everyone with pleading eyes, but all of you must learn to say no.
  • Don't procrastinate. Now is the right time, and you must persist until your health goal for your dog has been achieved. But, you must also remember that, according to veterinary experts, dogs must shed off not more than 7% of their body weight per month. You're not in a hurry; adopt healthy changes at your dog's pace, which you can keep throughout his life.

For more than 20 years now, I’ve been devoting my heart, energy, and time to fulfilling my dream, which – many people may agree – is not among the easiest aspirations in life. Part of my happiness is having been able to lend a hand to many individuals, companies, and even governments as an investigative journalist, creative writer, TV director, and radio broadcaster.

At home, I spend my free time learning how to cook various cuisines. Tiramisu, chocolate mousse, and banoffee pie are my favorite desserts. Playing with our dogs, Mushu and Jerusalem, is also a special part of my day. And, of course, I read a lot – almost anything under the sun. But what really makes me feel alive is meeting people from various walks of life and writing about their stories, which echo with the tears and triumph of an unyielding spirit, humanity, and wisdom.
