When it comes to wedding planning, few moments are as emotional and memorable as choosing the dress. For Katie Phillips, that milestone became even more poignant when she brought along her beloved dog, Koa, a six-year-old yellow Labrador retriever recently diagnosed with terminal cancer. Their story, which has resonated with many, is a powerful reminder of the deep bond between people and their pets, and how love can shine even in the most difficult times.

Phillips visited White on Daniel Island, a bridal boutique in Charleston, South Carolina, on July 6. She wasn’t alone. At her side was Koa, who has been with her through every chapter of life since she adopted the pup in 2019. Including Koa in the wedding dress shopping experience was a natural decision for Phillips, who told People that her dog is her “best friend, my girl, and my constant.”

Bringing a dog to a bridal fitting might seem unconventional, but for Phillips, it was meaningful beyond words. Koa had recently been diagnosed with oral melanoma, a fast-growing cancer that required surgery and a special vaccine to slow its spread. After a brief period of recovery and hope, the couple received heartbreaking news: the cancer had metastasized to Koa’s lungs, and veterinarians estimated she had about three months to live.

Despite the grim prognosis, Koa remained symptom-free and full of life, prompting Phillips and her fiancé, Nick Pizzo, to cherish every moment. The bridal boutique’s pet-friendly policy offered a rare opportunity to create a joyful memory in the midst of uncertainty. “The idea of including her in something joyful — something that I’ll always remember — felt really meaningful,” Phillips said.

From the moment they entered the shop, Koa seemed to understand the importance of the day. Calm and content, she followed Phillips closely, even into the dressing room. She lay at her owner’s feet as dresses were tried on, her tail wagging and her eyes full of quiet pride. Phillips described the energy as peaceful and celebratory, as though Koa knew she was part of something special.

I found this detail striking: Koa’s presence didn’t just provide comfort, it transformed the experience. Phillips admitted she didn’t find her dream dress that day, but it didn’t matter. The emotional connection and shared joy with Koa made the day unforgettable. “It was one of those moments where you just stop and think, ‘I’m going to remember this forever,’” she said.

Later, Phillips did find her wedding dress at another boutique, accompanied by her mother and best friend. While that moment was exciting, it lacked the emotional depth of the first appointment with Koa. She now hopes to include her dog in the fitting once the gown arrives, eager to capture a photo of them together in that special moment.

Koa has been a constant companion since puppyhood. Adopted in Georgia when she was just eight weeks old, she immediately bonded with Phillips and later became close with Pizzo’s dog, Evie, a five-year-old boxer and English pointer mix. The two dogs are now like sisters, and Koa has formed a strong bond with Pizzo as well. Phillips noted how meaningful it is to see how deeply they love each other, especially during such a challenging time.

In June, Koa and Evie were present during the couple’s engagement on the beach at Isle of Palms. As Pizzo proposed at sunrise, Koa enthusiastically joined in the celebration, even jumping in for a three-way kiss. That moment, filled with laughter and love, was another example of how intertwined Koa is with the couple’s journey.

Looking ahead, Phillips and Pizzo plan to marry in Barbados in April 2026. Before that, they will hold a civil ceremony in Charleston so that Koa can be included if she is still feeling strong. “I just want her to know how deeply she’s loved,” Phillips said. Her goal is to ensure that Koa feels special and included not only in the big milestones but in the quiet, everyday moments that make up a life.

This story, centered on a dog with cancer and her devoted owner, touches on themes of love, resilience, and the importance of savoring time with those we hold dear. It also highlights how even the most traditional experiences, like wedding dress shopping, can be made more meaningful when shared with those we love — furry friends included.

Phillips’ reflections offer a gentle reminder not to take the little things for granted. Couch cuddles, daily walks, and warm greetings at the door are not small things at all. They are, in fact, the moments that stay with us long after the big events have passed.
