Monash University in Victoria, Australia is killing greyhounds in the name of science.

According to Humane Research Australia, Monash’s experiment was intended to “investigate methods of preserving resuscitated hearts (perfusion devices) following ‘donation after circulatory death’ (DCD), and to assess recovery following subsequent heart transplantation.” The study involved 12 dogs. Half were asphyxiated. Their hearts were then surgically removed and preserved for four hours. The organs were then transplanted into six other dogs.

Any greyhounds that survived their transplants were killed.

Monash University has defended the barbaric experiment, claiming “the outcomes of this research will have a valuable influence on the 100 Australians - and thousands of people in the world – currently facing life-saving surgery. “

These greyhounds were betrayed by humans they believed they could trust. They were discarded by the unethical, cruel racing industry only to die terrible deaths at the hands of researchers.

Dogs are living beings and beloved companions. They are not tools for laboratory research. Experimenting on them is unnecessary and unethical. According to The American Journal of Translational Research, “the average rate of successful translation from animal models to clinical cancer trials is less than 8%.” Any scientist should know a rate of success that low would require a revaluation of methodologies. Emerging technologies are creating reliable non-animal experimentation methods.

Tell Monash University to stop funding experimentation on animals! This barbaric practice can’t be allowed to force innocent animals to suffer and die.
